Rooftop Prince

Rooftop Prince (Korean: 옥탑방 왕세자; RR: Oktab-bang Wangseja) is a 2012 South Korean fantasy romantic comedy television drama. It is about a Joseon crown prince who, after his wife dies mysteriously, time travels to the future where he encounters familiar faces, modern-day devices, and corporate intrigue.

Synopsis/Plot:  Tae-mu (Lee Tae-sung), after killing his lost cousin in the United States, returns to Korea, claiming that his cousin, Tae-yong (Park Yoochun), could not be found in New York City. Meanwhile, Tae-mu has been having a secret affair with Se-na (Jeong Yu-mi), his secretary, who, in turn, runs into her long-lost stepsister Park-ha (Han Ji-min). Park-ha has been missing for a prolonged period of time and it is revealed that she was in the US after Se-na abandoned her in a truck driving away when she was nine.

Two years after Tae-yong's disappearance, four men dressed in Joseon era garments, fall onto Park-ha's rooftop house. Hungry, homeless and having nowhere to go, the four men decide to stick with Park-ha. Their leader, Lee-gak claims to be the Crown Prince of Joseon (Park Yoochun), along with his entourage - scholar Song Man-bo (Lee Tae-ri), personal bodyguard Woo Yong-sool (Jung Suk-won), and palace eunuch Do Chi-san (Choi Woo-shik). One day, Crown Prince Lee Gak sees Se-na who is the spitting image of his beloved wife, who was found drowned in the 18th century. He is convinced she is his wife's reincarnation. Meanwhile, company president Yeo (Ban Hyo-jung) mistakes Lee Gak for her grandson, Yong Tae-yong, because of their exact same appearance, and believes that her long lost grandson has finally returned. Lee Gak realizes that he has time traveled 300 years to 2012, Seoul, to search for the truth behind the mysterious death of the late Crown Princess. In order to approach Se-na, who is also President Yeo's personal assistant, Lee Gak pretends that he is Tae-yong. Tae-mu, believing that he already killed his cousin in New York, lives in constant fear of his devious act being discovered by the family and "Tae-yong" (aka Lee Gak) who claims not to have remembered the event. Tae-mu has always been jealous of Tae-yong's favored position in the family.

On the other hand, Park-ha is shocked by the news that her new friend who calls himself the Crown Prince is, in fact, the grandson of the CEO. But before long, her feelings for Lee Gak blossom and she is hurt when she finds out that Lee Gak, who still holds very tender memories of his dead wife, is courting Se-na. Lee Gak also believes that marrying Se-na in Seoul in the year 2012 would bring him closer to solving the mystery of the Crown Princess' murder in the Joseon era.

The Moon Embracing the Sun

Moon Embracing the Sun (Korean: 해를 품은 ; RR: Haereul Pum-eun Dal, also known as The Moon That Embraces the Sun or The Sun and the Moon) is a 2012 South Korean television drama series.

Synopsis/Plot:  Ari, a shaman of the Royal Star Mansion (Royal Astrology House), is awakened one night by a psychic impression of imminent danger to one of the king's sons, who is considered a potential rival for the throne. When she investigates, she witnesses his murder and is discovered by the perpetrators who gave chase. She manages to escape but is greatly injured in the process. The next day, after she receives help from the pregnant wife of the palace's Chief Scholar, Ari has a vision about the fate of the unborn child. In gratitude for the aid she received, Ari promises to watch over the child, even in death.

Later that day, Ari is arrested, tortured, and thrown in jail. Her friend and fellow shaman, Jang Nok-yeong, visits her in secret. Ari tells Nok-yeong that she has foreseen the birth of a young woman who has a "noble fate" and who is connected to the royal house. Knowing that her death is near, Ari begs Nok-yeong to watch over this child in her stead. Nok-yeong makes a promise without even knowing who or where the child is. The next day, Ari is declared guilty of treason and tortured, refusing to lie about the murder, and is executed while receiving visions of the future once more.

Several years pass and the aristocratic but modest and loving Heo family now includes two children: seventeen-year-old son Yeom and thirteen-year-old daughter, Yeon-woo (which means "misty rain"). Even at such a young age, Yeon-woo already exhibits wisdom beyond her years. One day, Yeon-woo accompanies her mother to the royal palace to attend Yeom's civil service examination congratulatory ceremony. Yeon-woo wanders away from the ceremony after being distracted by a butterfly and has a chance encounter with Crown Prince Lee Hwon. Although there was brief misunderstanding about each other's identities, as a result of their chance encounter, Lee Hwon and Yeon-woo fall in love.

Meanwhile, Yeom's outstanding scholarship caused him to be immediately engaged as a tutor for the Crown Prince. Yeon-woo, on the other hand, is chosen to be a companion for the prepubescent Princess Min-hwa along with Bo-kyung, the ambitious and deceitful daughter of the palace's Prime Minister and maternal blood relative to the Queen Dowager. Jang Nok-yeong, now the Head Shaman, realizes that Yeon-woo is the child whom Ari begged her to protect years ago.

Min-hwa, the younger sister of Crown Prince Lee Hwon, is a young girl who cries, whines, and screams when she does not get her way. Upon seeing her brother's handsome "Teacher Heo", Min-hwa becomes obsessed with him. When she discovers that Yeon-woo is Teacher Heo's sister, she expresses her preference for Yeon-woo's company. Bo-kyung, who is all but ignored by the princess, feels slighted by the princess' favoritism. Min-hwa soon asks her father to allow her to marry Yeom. The king refuses, for reasons that are rooted in tradition, political strategy, and socio-cultural correctness. He explains to Min-hwa that the husband of a princess (Prince Consort) is not allowed to be involved in political matters and cannot have any governmental position. He adds that Yeom is an intelligent and morally upright person and that marrying the princess would ruin his political aspirations.

Some time later, Yeon-woo is demonstrated to be the superior choice (over Bo-kyung and another young woman) to wed Lee Hwon and become the Crown Princess of Joseon. This decision upsets Prince Yang Myung, the Crown Prince's freewheeling but misunderstood half-brother, who has also met and fallen in love with Yeon-woo, as well as Bo-kyung and her corrupt father, Prime Minister Yoon.

Yeon-woo undertakes her training to become the Crown Princess; she seems to be a bit physically clumsy at first, but is also lovingly courted by Crown Prince Lee Hwon during the training period.

Before Lee Hwon and Yeon-woo can marry, the Queen Dowager secretly orders Nok-yeong to cast a curse on Yeon-woo to afflict her with a sickness that will lead to her death. The Queen Dowager wants to install her blood relative, Bo-kyung, as the Crown Princess instead. Nok-yeong breaks her promise to protect Yeon-woo. The Queen Dowager uses Princess Min-hwa as a conduit to intensify the effect of the shaman's spell, as it is known that a young virgin with strong desires and motivations lend a great deal of power to sorcery. The Queen Dowager promises Min-hwa that if she participates in the spell, Min-hwa can have what she wants: to marry Yeom. Min-hwa's selfish immaturity and obsession with Yeom lead her to participate willingly, though it is also clear that she is manipulated by the Queen Dowager.

The black magic is successful and Yeon-woo is diagnosed with an unidentifiable illness by the royal physicians. She is thus expelled from the palace, losing her title as Crown Princess. As she inches closer to death, Nok-yeong secretly visits Yeon-woo's father and gives him a special potion, promising that it will bring a peaceful death for his daughter. He gives her the potion and she dies, as her death is the only way to release her from the spell. After her burial, Nok-yeong and a paid help hurriedly dig up the grave and retrieve Yeon-woo, knowing that she will soon awaken from the potion. Yeon-woo is deeply traumatized by dying and then waking up buried alive, losing all memories of her previous life. With assistance and support from a Taoist priest, Shaman Jang, Yeon-woo, and Seol (the Heo family's loyal former maidservant) go into hiding in a distant location.

Crown Prince Lee Hwon is soon married to Bo-kyung. Lee Hwon flatly refuses to consummate the marriage with Bo-kyung; he repeatedly feigns illness in order to avoid physical intimacy and further tries to avoid any interactions at all with her. The only people Lee Hwon allows near him are the eunuch who serves him and the sword master Woon. Woon's ever-presence with the prince leads some in the palace to quietly question Lee Hwon's sexuality, not understanding that Lee Hwon's heart still belongs to a woman presumed dead. Bo-kyung becomes progressively more humiliated and bitter about the Crown Prince's obvious distaste for her. The king dies, and Crown Prince Lee Hwon becomes the King of Joseon. With the former king's death, the need for Lee Hwon to produce an heir to the throne becomes more and more urgent. For this reason, the people around Lee Hwon are willing to try anything to help him recover from his "illness."

Eight years later, it is learned that the flow of the universe has shifted and the three "exiles" in hiding are sent back to the capital city. Yeon-woo has now become a shaman after being adopted as a "spiritual daughter" by Shaman Jang. Shaman Jang has sworn Seol to secrecy about Yeon-woo's true identity. Yeon-woo, now known as Shaman Wol (which means "moon") returns to the palace as a living talisman - a "bad-luck-absorbing" shaman — suggested by Shaman Jang as a way to cure the king's "illness." The king awakens one night to find Shaman Wol sitting by his bedside, and her unmistakable resemblance to his true love, Yeon-woo, causes the young king to start questioning what really happened to Yeon-woo eight years ago and quietly launches a thorough investigation. Meanwhile, Yeon-woo must try to understand the strange memories that are coming back to her while simultaneously contending with Queen Bo-kyung, the Queen's Father (who is still the Prime Minister), and the Queen Dowager in order to claim her rightful place as the Queen of Joseon. Political intrigue continues to build and comes shockingly to a head as King Lee Hwon fights for his throne, fights for the woman he loves, and fights for his very life.

Descendants of the Sun

Sypnosis/Plot: Yoo Si-jin (Song Joong-ki) is the captain of a South Korean Special Forces unit. He and his friend Sergeant Major Seo Dae-young (Jin Goo) are off-duty when they witness a young man, Kim Ki-bum (Kim Min-seok), steal a motorcycle and apprehend him. The thief is injured during his capture and therefore sent to the hospital. Dae-young realizes his cell phone was stolen by the thief and goes to the hospital along with Si-jin to retrieve his cellphone.

In the emergency room, Si-jin meets Dr. Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-kyo) for the first time, and is instantly attracted to her. Mo-yeon mistakenly assumes Si-jin is part of the thief's criminal gang, due to his nickname "Big Boss", which is actually his call sign. He proves his identity with the help of army surgeon Yoon Myung-ju (Kim Ji-won).

Si-jin and Mo-yeon begin to date, but due to their jobs, their dates are often interrupted halfway. Si-jin receives his orders to be deployed on a peacekeeping mission in the country of Uruk (present day: Iraq). Meanwhile, Mo-yeon is upset because she had been passed over for professorship in favor of a colleague who had familial connections to the hospital management. When Si-jin returns and meets Mo-yeon again, they talk about their views on life and realize how different they are. Si-jin, as a soldier, kills to protect lives while Mo-yeon, as a doctor, honors the Hippocratic Oath and tries to save lives. Due to this difference in viewpoints on life, they agree to part ways. Dae-young, on the other hand, faces a dilemma on whether to continue his relationship with Myung-ju or risk being forced out of the army by Myung-ju's father for breaking fraternization rules.

Eight months later, Mo-yeon rebuffs the advances of the hospital director and, as a result, is assigned to lead a medical team to Uruk. There, Si-jin and Mo-yeon reunite. Through their encounters in Uruk, an earthquake and an epidemic, their love for each other grows stronger. Mo-yeon gains an insight into Si-jin's job and is forced to confront the stark reality that she may never have full disclosure of his whereabouts due to the highly classified nature of his work and the possibility of him being killed in action. While in Uruk, Mo-yeon accidentally confesses her feelings (much to the amusement of their respective teams) and the two officially start dating.

Si-jin and Mo-yeon continue their relationship after returning to Korea, until Si-jin and Dae-young are sent on a classified operation in which they disappear and are assumed to be dead. Months pass, and Mo-yeon mourns Si-Jin's death, deciding to commemorate his passing with a volunteer trip to Albania. This is where Si-jin eventually finds her after he and Dae-young are rescued from captivity by "a friend from afar", a soldier from North Korea whom Si-jin had helped earlier. Si-jin and Mo-yeon along with Myung-ju and Dae-young are all happily reunited with each other.

Yi San (Lee San, Wind of the Palace)

Yi San (Hangul: 이산; Hanja: 李祘), also known as Lee San, Wind of the Palace, is a 2007 South Korean historical drama, starring Lee Seo-jin and Han Ji-min.

Sypnosis/Plot: Yi San dramatizes the life of Korea's King Jeongjo, the 22nd ruler of the Joseon Dynasty. Jeongjo is remembered in Korean history for his sympathy with the plight of the common man, in spite of his own pampered upbringing as royalty.

The drama begins with the King's early years, during which he befriends two children working in the Palace who are later expelled. King Yeongjo (Jeongjo's grandfather) seals Jeongjo's father, Crown Prince Sado, in a rice storage chest with no food or water because he fears that the crown prince is planning a coup. Jeongjo wants to save his father, and with the help of his friends Seong Song Yeon and Park Dae Su, begs King Yeongjo to forgive the Crown Prince.

The drama then skips forward to Jeongjo's adult years when he and his friends re-establish contact with each other. Throughout, Jeongjo's position as Crown Prince is threatened by palace intrigues.

The Crown Prince, Jeongjo, begins to fall in love with one of his childhood friends, Seong Song Yeon, whose father, a palace artist, died when she was young. The story then follows Yi San's rise to power, his assumption of the kingship, and the labyrinthine palace intrigues that he must constantly guard against from the No-ron Faction. While the show does deviate from the historical record in a number of ways, its representation of court life during the Joseon Dynasty appears to be based on contemporary sources.

Admin's Review:

Yi San is a historical drama that you will also in love. It’s very long but still good to watch. No boring moments, the characters were deep, rich and vibrant. The love story, friendship and loyalty were so exceptional. The story was most centered around the King and politics. The lead male actor Lee Seo Jin portrayed as the King. He was loyal to his subjects and people, he hates it when someone risks their own life for his, and always tries to protect them instead. He was simply the best.

You will love every minute of this drama series, you wouldn’t want it to end. I’m pretty sure you will have an interest about the life of Yi San (King Jeongjo of Joseon). He is the great grand son of Dong Yi (Choi Suk-bin).

You must watch also “Warrior Baek Dong-Soo”, “8 Days of Assassination Attempt against King Jeongjo) and “Secret Door” after finishing this (Yi San). Some point, they were related to Yi San. You will see the connections.
